Have you ever heard the phrase, “It’s not about the destination but the journey”?
Travelling between destinations can be fun in itself, and allows you to see a different side of the place you are visiting. Today I will write about 3 different train rides with beautiful scenery, perfect for visiting in summer.
1. Switzerland – Jungfrau Railway
Best views can be seen between Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg.
Jungfrau Railway is well known throughout the world for its long history.
From Interlaken at the foot of the alps, to Jungfraujoch, the tallest rail station in Europe (3454m above sea level), there are incredible views that you can’t take your eyes off.
In particular, the stretch between Grindelwald (1034m) and Kleine Scheidegg (2061m) must not be missed.
The scenery going past the north cliff of famous mountain Eiger is breathtaking regardless of the season! It is very crowded during the summer time so it might be a good idea to book accommodation at Grindelwald in order to secure a window seat early in the morning.
2. Norway – Flåm Railway
Best views can be seen between Myrdal and Flåm.
Train lover or not, this picturesque route is somewhere to visit at least once in your life.
You can ride this train route as part of the Fjord travel package Norway Nutshell so you will be able to see many different scenic spots.
The departure from Myrdal with a height of 867m, to the end of the line Flåm at 0m, the Flåm Railway weaves between precipitous cliffs, taking around 50 minutes. There is also a chance to take a commemorative photograph in front of an impressive waterfall.
The last stop of the service, Flåm, is the base point for sightseeing in Fjord. It is a great place to relax and spend the night. Also, you can take scenic ferry tours from Flåm to see the beauty of Fjord up close.
3. Canada – The Canadian
Best views can be seen between Vancouver and Jasper.
The last route I will introduce is the attractive transcontinental railroad, The Canadian. Within it, the route from Vancouver in the west coast to Jasper in the Canadian Rockies is particularly popular for its beautiful landscapes.
It is approximately a 20 hour journey, with the train departing Vancouver at 8:30pm arriving at 4:00pm the next day. In order to enjoy the trip comfortably, it is recommended to book one of the newly installed private cabins. Within these cabins is a washbasin, shower and toilet, and breakfast and lunch are included in the ticket price.
By the time you wake up the day after departing Vancouver, the train is surrounded by huge meadows and by midday you will be able to see the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies!
In order to enjoy the scenery even more, you can move to the Skyline Car carriages where there are glass walls up until the ceiling.
While watching landscapes from the window including mountains, lakes and waterfalls, it will feel like you arrive in Jasper in an instant!
What did you think?
Today I introduced scenic railroads which are particularly recommended for summer. It is a joy to make your way slowly to the destination for a carefree trip.
